Rice
“The gentle squeal of the express pot, a steamy mist rising in the kitchen. The rice was ready! These were the sensory signals of my childhood that ushered in each new day.” (Yupica)
Some of Yupica’s work is largely comprised of rice. There are photographic portraits of single grains. Hundreds and thousands of circular disks of rice bound in resin are a recurring feature. For Yupica, rice is a fundamental component of his existence as an organism, and now an extension of this corporality through art. Exploring the uniqueness and potential of individual grains, he reveals the power and potency of the group as a whole.
It is difficult to appreciate the flavour of a single grain yet the scope of what can be created with rice is impressive: alcohol, sweets, cookies, rolls, pasta, soup. The capacity of rice for transformation and mutation is unlimited. It exemplifies how the conjunction of thousands of heterogeneous elements can unite to enable thousands of transformations in the creation of new forms and flavors, questioning what is individuality. The power of rice as seed; so much coming from one small force. Is it the basic unit or the community and to what extent they need each other?
