Yupica

Born in Tokyo, 1982; lives and works in Mexico City.
Following a career in the filmmaking industry spanning 10 years, Yupica sought to evolve what he created on the screen to generate real world sensory experiences through art.
He began to develop multimedia installations, sculptures, prints and moving images in wide ranging scales, from microscopic pieces to architectural projects.  Yupica’s work utilizes sequential images and materials such as rice and resin to address conceptual ideas about time, structuralism and the dissolution of singularity. Formlessness is explored through the usage of time as a material. Rice portraits illustrate the opposite of individuation; that what it means to be an individual is illusory.

In 2013, Yupica founded the interdisciplinary collective ChaMeshiJi which has exhibited in Mexico City:  La Quiñonera in 2014; the Museum of the City of Mexico in 2016 and Casa del Lago from 2014 - 2016.

Yupica was invited to contribute to the International Festival of Lights, Mexico City in 2016; and Merida in 2017. Each event attracted more than 50,000 visitors.

In addition to working with artistic and public venues, Yupica has created installations for culinary and design platforms, including Millesime, Banamex Center, Mexico City in 2017 and Design House within the event Design Week, Mexico City in 2018.
